Sun dyeing (Heliographic fabric art) with HI-STRIKE

This very simple process allows you to create images on the your cloth. Use anything that is fairly flat and not too 3-dimensional to create your images. Favourite objects are pressed leaves, precut cardboard, shells, sea stars, buttons, lace, paper cut outs, leaves, feathers, lace, netting, flowers - place them on the fabric and let the sun do the rest. The objects you put on the fabric will leave their impressions.

Great for working with children

 Small articles

Stretch your fabric on an embroidery hoop, over artist stretcher bar, or a cardboard box. Use masking tape to secure the fabric tightly.

Long length

Lay fabric on ground and secure corners with stones or tent pegs.

1. Dilute Hi-Strike colours by mixing them, 2 parts of water to 1 part of Hi-Strike

2. Moisten the stretched fabric with water using a foam brush.

3. Apply your diluted colours with foam brushes or sponge. Dabbing the colour on your fabric creates cloud-like shapes. Long brush strokes produce smooth colour.

4. while the surface of your fabric is still wet, lay feathers, lace, netting, leaves, precut cardboard, flowers
or anything on the fabric and let the sun do the rest. The objects you put on the fabric will leave their impressions. Great for working with children, or for creative adults.

5. Salt can also be sprinkled on the painted wet fabric for marbled effect.

6. Your stretched fabric should be placed in the sun or under an infra-red heat lamp, until dry.

7. Once the fabric is dry, remove your objects and brush off the salt. Your fabric is now printed and ready to heat set.

Heat setting;
Allow your fabric to dry completely. Then iron the reverse side of the fabric for at least 3 to 4 minutes. Set your iron to the temperature that is best suited for your fabric type. Use a press cloth between the fabric and your iron.

Washing;
Allow at least 48 hours after heat setting before washing or dry cleaning your fabric.
